LPDAM Mission Massachusetts Licensed Private Investigators History and dedication After much preliminary work, The Licensed Private Detectives Association of Massachusetts or L.P.D.A.M. was foun

ded on April 5 of 1990 by Ron Rice of New England Legal Investigations located in Pembroke, Arthur Murphy of Maze Consultants and Investigations located in Georgetown, Phillip White of American Associates Detective Agency located in Brockton and Donald Watts of Yankee Detective Agency located in Randolph. The four "Founding Fathers" met with a goal to unify, represent and advance the professional private investigator in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. After a year of organizational meetings the first annual meeting was on April 4,1991. Governed by a 15 person Board of Officers and Directors, the Association became incorporated in 1994. The mission of L.P.D.A.M. is to further enhance the image of the Massachusetts private investigator through member seminars, continuing education, legislative action, and positive public relations and by sheer professional example. Please search our Find a Detective database. The business of Private Detectives and Private Investigation is a profession regulated by Massachusetts state law. Anyone who practices as a Private Detective, Bodyguard, Polygraph Examiner, Accident Reconstructionist, Insurance Investigator or Arson Investigator in Massachusetts must be properly Licensed, or the W-2 Employee of a properly Licensed company, under Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 147, Sections 22-30. Currently, the Massachusetts State Police, Certification Unit enforces the Private Detective and Watch Guard Statutes within the Commonwealth. Any state law enforcement agency or local police department may prosecute violations of M.G.L. Ch. 147, ss. 22-30. As the self-regulating Professional Association representing Licensed Private Detectives and their employees in Massachusetts, the LPDAM supports the aggressive enforcement of our licensing laws. By Phil White, PP They said we could not start a new organization to represent the interests of the private investigator licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They said we would not get over 200 agencies and their employees to unite and join together to improve their investigative knowledge and professional stature. THEY SAID IT COULD NOT BE DONE !!! They said we could not hold first class training seminars to increase our knowledge and better educate our members. They said we could not get attendance, quality speakers , make money, or be successful at all. THEY SAID IT COULD NOT BE DONE !!! They said we could not get the Massachusetts State Police to issue photo ID cards to licensed private detectives. They said it was too costly, too much bureaucratic red tape and that the State Police would not co-operate. THEY SAID IT COULD NOT BE DONE !!! They said we could not get the NYNEX phone company to place "HEADER NOTICES" in the Yellow Pages Directory at the Detectives listings indicating that Investigators had to be licensed by the State Police. They said it would cost NYNEX too much money to do so. They said we could not rid the profession of the high number of flagrantly un-licensed investigators taking cases and money from our members. They said the State Police would not respond or combat unlicensed activity THEY SAID IT COULD NOT BE DONE !!! They said we could not reduce the $1100.00 original license fee and the $600.00 renewal license fee to a more reasonable rate. They were emphatic, with the economic climate at that time and projected budget shortfalls they were sure the Commonwealth would not even hear of it. THEY WERE ABSOLUTLY POSITIVE………… THEY SAID IT COULD NOT BE DONE !!! They said we were a flash in the pan and would wither and die on the vine. They said our association would not reach the five-year anniversary, the hallmark of business success. THEY SAID IT COULD NOT BE DONE !!! They said we would not be able to retain a lobbyist to protect our legislative interests on Beacon Hill. They said it was much too expensive and costly. THEY SAID IT COULD NOT BE DONE !!! They said we could not get bills passed in the legislature, prevent bills from passage and they further said we would never reverse a bill, which the Governor has vetoed. They said we could not obtain competent corporate council to protect our legal interests. They said we could not afford to retain adequate legal representation. They said our treasury would never be strong and healthy. They said we would never have sufficient operating capitol to survive, make investments and offer annual member scholarships. Outrageous …..they said ! They said we would never be able to win the fight to include PIs as an exemption in the Federal Drivers Privacy Protection Act, both at the Federal level and in the proposed Commonwealth's version. They scoffed at the slogan "In numbers there is strength, unity and progress." They said other states would not participate They said we would never be able to create, initiate and form a New England Council of State Investigative Associations, to unite and share ideas, resources and to network. They said that the concept was much to broad and the plan totally unworkable. They said we would not be here in the year 2000. They said we would never make five years in existence let alone celebrate ten years of dedicated service to the profession. cholarship Instruction guide for High School Students The LPDAM is extremely proud to offer educational scholarships to deserving sons, daughters and grandchildren of LPDAM members. The LPDAM is very mindful of the importance of supporting today s youth as they further their education beyond high school and prepare themselves to enter the workforce of today. The LPDAM offers a minimum of two (2) scholarships every year between the months of May and June. The scholarships offered are : L.P.D.A.M. Licensed Private Detectives Association of Massachusetts Scholarship Fund The LPDAM Annual "Ernie Reid" Scholarship Award in the amount of $1000.00 . The LPDAM Annual "Patrick Digby" Scholarship Award in the amount of $500.00 . These awards are given to applicants based on Educational requirements, Community involvement and Personal references. In the final phase of choosing the recipient, the applicant answers a series of questions in a verbal interview by the LPDAM President and the Scholarship Chairman. The LPDAM hopes to offer a 3rd scholarship beginning in the year 2012 known as the: All funding for the Scholarship program currently comes from member contributions. The LPDAM also holds a Bi-Annual LPDAM Golf Tournament which is open to both members and the public. ALL MONIES raised from this tournament go directly to the Scholarship Fund.
